A whole reef fish grilled over coconut husks and served over hot rice is a straightforward, protein-rich Micronesian breakfast, the kind of savoury morning plate that fuels a day on and around the water.
The fish is cooked simply over the fire, the burning coconut husks lending a gentle smoke, then brightened with a squeeze of lime. Served on rice, it makes a no-fuss meal that puts the freshness of the catch first.
In a region where the reef is the pantry, starting the day with grilled fish is entirely natural. Clean, smoky, and satisfying, the dish reflects a food culture built around the sea and the coconut palm.

Palikir. Yams here are grown for standing as much as for eating. They are cultivated competitively for the kamadipw feasts and measured by how many men it takes to carry one, offered alongside pigs and sakau, and what a family brings speaks for them.

Micronesia. Sakau is Pohnpei's kava, pounded on a flat basalt stone with a rhythm that carries across a village and strained through the inner bark of hibiscus into a coconut shell. It is drunk in a nahs, a community house, and the order in which cups are passed follows title and rank rather than who arrived first.
🌍
Oceania. Oceania spans Australia, New Zealand, and thousands of Pacific islands, where the ocean and the coconut palm define the pantry. Traditional Polynesian and Melanesian cooking centers on root crops, taro, yam, cassava, and sweet potato, slow-cooked in earth ovens (the umu or mumu) alongside fresh reef fish and rich coconut cream. Modern Australian and Māori kitchens blend these deep roots with waves of Asian and European influence.
The story behind this dish is up top, worth a read while the pot works.
