Turkey

Asia · This week's dish comes from İzmir (Aegean)

About Turkey

Turkish cuisine sits where Ottoman palace kitchens met Anatolian village fires, spanning mezes, slow-cooked kebabs, stuffed vegetables (dolma), and an unrivaled tradition of sweets like baklava. Bread, yogurt, and tea accompany nearly every meal.
Turkish breakfast is called kahvalti, from kahve and alti, literally what goes under the coffee, because it began as the small spread eaten before the day's first cup. It has since expanded into an event: cheeses, olives, tomatoes and cucumbers, eggs, honey with clotted cream, jams, borek and bread, with tea poured continuously throughout.
Baklava's origins are genuinely unsettled, argued between Greek, Arab-Persian and Central Asian Turkic ancestries, so nobody should be handed the invention. What is documented is Gaziantep: its baklava was the first Turkish product to win an EU protected geographical indication, in 2013, and the specification requires Antep pistachios.
The wider picture: From street-cart woks to slow monastery kitchens.

Discussion prompts

1. Find Turkey on a world map or globe. It sits in Asia. Which oceans or neighboring countries does it touch, and roughly how far is it from where you live?
2. Menemen comes from İzmir (Aegean), in Turkey. Read its ingredient list together. Which of those foods do you think are grown or raised nearby, and how might the country's climate and landscape explain that?
3. Read the short story behind Menemen. How have the people, trade routes, and history of Turkey shaped what ends up on the plate there?
4. Compare Menemen to a dish your own family cooks. What is similar, what is different, and what one question would you ask a family in Turkey about how they make and share it?
5. After you cook Menemen, add Turkey to a classroom map and give it a stamp. Write down one fact about its food or geography that you did not know this morning.
